SPH
stands for Sphere. It indicates your main nearsightedness (myopia) or farsightedness (hyperopia) correction.
Minus sign (-) : Nearsightedness (e.g., -2.00).
Plus sign (+) : Farsightedness (e.g., +1.50).
0 or Plano (PL) : No significant nearsightedness or farsightedness in that eye.
These work together to correct astigmatism:
CYL
(Cylinder): Measures the amount of astigmatism. It's a number with a + or - sign (e.g., -0.75, +1.25). 0 or blank means no astigmatism.
AXIS
: Indicates the orientation or angle (in degrees) of the astigmatism correction. It ranges from 0° to 180° (e.g., 90, 180). If CYL is 0, AXIS is usually blank.
ADD
stands for Addition. It's the extra magnifying power added to your distance prescription (SPH) specifically for near vision tasks (like reading or using a phone).
It's always a positive number (e.g., +1.00, +2.50).
Only needed for multifocal lenses (progressives, bifocals, reading glasses). Single vision distance lenses won't have an ADD.
PD
is your Pupillary Distance. It's the distance (in millimeters - mm) between the centers of your pupils.
Crucially Important! Ensures the optical center of each lens aligns perfectly with your pupil for clear, comfortable vision.
Typical adult range: 54mm - 74mm.
Sometimes given as Monocular PD (e.g., 32/33
), meaning the distance from the bridge of your nose to each pupil center.
Please provide an accurate PD (either binocular like 64 or monocular like 32/33)! An incorrect PD can cause eye strain, headaches, or blurry vision.
Prism
and Base
are used to correct eye alignment or focusing issues (like double vision, strabismus, or severe eye strain).
Prism
: The amount of prismatic correction needed, measured in prism diopters (denoted by Δ, e.g., 1.5Δ, 3Δ).
Base
: The direction the thickest part (base) of the prism is placed:
BU
- Base Up
BD
- Base Down
BI
- Base In (towards the nose)
BO
- Base Out (towards the ears)
Note: Prism is only present in specific prescriptions prescribed by an eye doctor to address particular vision problems. Precision in manufacturing is critical.
